Born in the 80's

19 November 2022

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the eighties? You probably think of colorful cars, voluminous hairstyles, rubber bracelets, shoulder pads, and leotards. However, this era is much more than that. The eighties were years full of social, cultural and economic transformations that forever altered the way we relate to each other.

The last decade has seen a rebirth of pop culture icons from the '80s. We have seen launches of television series set in these years - such as Stranger Things -, remakes of popular films of those years - such as Ghostbusters - and launches of merchandise inspired by the eighties - such as the sneakers from Back to the Future -. This is not to mention the revival of music, not only inspired by the eighties sound, but also by hits from this decade such as Kate Bush or Metallica.

Nostalgia plays a very important role in the return of the eighties. Although it can be difficult to define nostalgia , especially because sometimes it seems that we are talking about a thing and not a feeling, we understand it as that "feeling of longing for a past moment, situation or event. An emotion crossed by sadness, pleasure, absence, affection and distance produced by a particular stage of the immediate past.

The eighties symbolized a watershed in the mass media, especially audiovisual media. The boom of television, cinema, and ultra-produced music videos as references for culture has its origins in the first half of this decade. That is why we still maintain as references many of the most characteristic urban tribes of the eighties and several musical icons, such as Madonna.

But the eighties not only influenced us in the cultural sphere. These years also witnessed one particular phenomenon that would change the lives of more than half of the population forever: the mass incorporation of women into the workforce. Although during World War II, women had already been seen occupying male positions at work, this ended with the end of the war.

The eighties were different. Women joined the workforce not only to replace men's work or to assist them as secretaries or nurses. These years saw the appointment of the first women to high-ranking positions, such as CEO's, CFO's and even Prime Minister. Personalities such as Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Svetlana Savitskaja, Benazir Bhutto became a source of inspiration for an entire generation. This achievement was not easy, it was accompanied by thousands of challenges because the type of work that " women should do" was still stigmatized and stereotyped .

Fashion was strongly influenced by these events, resulting in the creation of the power suit and women's Bostonians. Mexico was never left behind, in the field of fashion, this decade also saw the birth of the first Mexican fashion house: Regina Romero. Our company not only faced international reluctance to be a Mexican fashion brand, it also had to fight in the field of gender.

It was thanks to the support of her husband, children and family in general that today Regina Calzada de Romero remains a cultural reference in Mexican fashion. To this day, Regina Romero continues to be a family business that is based on these values. Gracias !
