Old jeans: the new trend

9 January 2024

In favor of sustainability

by Mishiko García
There is no garment more versatile than good jeans. Thousands of shapes, colors and cuts complement the wardrobes of men and women and are the most adaptable garment for any style.
Denim goes so well with everything... even shoes! Bailey Model
The Spring Summer 2024 season is already knocking on our door and this garment, which has never lost its capacity for renewal, returns with greater strength. This time, jeans will be the ideal complement to renew and highlight any outfit. They are a call to creativity.
Our model Bárbara has already dressed with the new SS24 trend
Curiously, the origin of this garment that is a revolution in each generation is quite peculiar. Emerging as a work garment, jeans demonstrated their power as a symbol of social equality and, in some cases, even rebellion. Originating in 1800 in a town in the south of France called Nimes, - hence the derivative of the name "denim" -, it quickly adapted to the whole world, becoming a cultural symbol and, as incredible as it may seem, its use It was even banned in some schools because of the values it represented.

Its speed in adapting to the world as a symbol of liberation led to massive international production. Today, denim is one of the most produced materials worldwide. And, despite its durability, it results in an ecological disaster: 3,780 liters of water are needed to produce jeans. Many rivers have been completely contaminated with this practice, creating destructive landscapes for the inhabitants of the surrounding areas.

The alarming nature of this situation can be seen in the figures that describe it. In addition to the immeasurable amount of water for the production of denim, 110 kilowatts of energy are also required, and 32 kilos of carbon dioxide are emitted, studies by the French Environment and Energy Control Agency (ADEME) certify.
Pollution has left environments that look as dazzling as they are toxic
Today, being at the forefront in the world of fashion does not only mean complying with trends. Putting sustainability and responsible consumption into practice, carrying out denim recycling campaigns or using technologies that allow us to reduce the use of water in the production of jeans, is a fundamental precept for environmental conservation.

The first recommendation, as always, is to stay as far away as possible from all those brands that are governed by the fast fashion model . Quality will never be improved by quantity, and it will always be preferable to have long-lasting garments so that their impact and economic and ecological costs are reduced.

There are various recommendations to extend the useful life of our denim garments and reduce our ecological footprint. Washing jeans less frequently and reusing them as much as possible is a good start, in addition to preferring raw denim , that is, textiles that have not undergone chemical treatment after being made.
Unlike light denim that has been stone-washed, chemical-washed or sanded to produce an aged effect, dark, fade-free jeans are a better choice. This material also helps to not affect the health of workers in this industry as much.

And also, in favor of innovation, we can take trends to our advantage: making an old pair of jeans as durable as possible can mean transforming them into another garment. Turning a pair of jeans into a new bag or shoes, full of memories, can save our planet and our wardrobe, in addition to answering that call to creativity.
