Women who dress women

3 February 2024

In a world ruled by men, the doors do not open the way for women, but the fight to overturn that is constant and has had strong outbreaks throughout the history of humanity.

The fashion industry, for its part, involves brutal competition; and, in the case of women, it has served as a powerful avenue for their autonomy, but the price has been high. Surrounded by male names, their contribution seems to fade despite their work and contributions. It is such a long process that sometimes it tends towards the invisible.

The painting "Girl at the Sewing Machine", by Edward Hopper, could perfectly represent the loneliness and challenges that fashion designers face.

That is why, from December 2023 until March 3 of the present, the MET in New York presents an exhibition that opens new perspectives on the women who have left their mark on the world of fashion from the 20th century to the present. today.

In Women dressing women , we have a clear objective. In the words of its CEO, Marina Kellen, “the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the vital contributions of women to fashion…”.

Names such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Miuccia Prada, Vivienne Westwood or Coco Chanel, who today enjoy great fame, join personalities that the exhibition seeks to recognize and exalt for their achievements, techniques and artistic contributions; and thus we discovered Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, Adèle Henriette Nigrin Fortuny, Gabriela Hearst, Ann Lowe, Claire McCardell, Pia Davis, Autumn Randolph of No Sesso and Madeleine Vionnet, among many others.

All of these women have made unquantifiable contributions to making the fashion industry what it is today. The diversity of proposals and dialogues should open our eyes to the recognition of their work, but also to new opportunities.
It seems logical that it should be this way, because what would be the most appropriate to understand the thoughts and needs of a woman, her lines, her cadence and her desire to express? Without a doubt, it would be another woman.
In our case, we are proud to be the first fashion footwear house in Mexico, aware of the needs of Mexican women and always bringing the best of international fashion, without sacrificing quality and comfort.

We belong to the great 20th century and we innovate to last, just as these women have done, whose names will go down in history. Remembering their names and associating them with a legacy in the history of fashion is to praise their contributions to humanity.

We are sure that the name of our designer is little by little placed on the Mexican fashion scene to transcend time.

If recognition is quite difficult to achieve on the international stage, we must accept not without some sadness , which is even harder for Latin America. In 1981, close to the year Regina Romero was founded, the Venezuelan Carolina Herrera consolidated her fashion brand before the world, with her first official show and such was its success that, by the following year, she was already dressing celebrities and members of the royalty.

Today we remember his name, his legacy and, without a doubt, his creations. Given this, I can't stop thinking about that moment when my mother, Regina Calzada de Romero, decided to give her own name to this great brand.

I confess that I was afraid of such a reckless decision. Now I understand that it could not have been more correct, because that decision carries such force that it has impacted all those women who wear it. Her name, reflected in the brand and her great legacy, is another great woman dressing hundreds of women.
