« Halston, Lagerfeld, De la Renta… What they did was superior to art, because you live your life in it. »
-. Nigel, The devil wears Prada.
Of all the ways that exist to express our individuality , fashion is probably seen as the most banal of all.
It is common to hear praise for the visual arts for their way of interpreting society ; to music for how it reflects a way of thinking ; or to architecture for materializing a specific historical moment . However, when talking about fashion we are branded as superficial and do not stop at the aspects that, in reality, influence our way of dressing .
It is not necessary to go very far to affirm that fashion is a social phenomenon . A couple of examples of how aesthetics is associated with the ideals and values of specific groups are the hippie and punk movements .
The first was a group that preached " love and peace " in relaxed , carefree attire and with a connection to nature . Punk , on the other hand , is a visually violent response that sought to break standards .
ILSE MODEL
There are some indicators , although quite controversial among sociologists, historians and economists, that link the height of the garments with the economic situation . The most famous, perhaps, is the hemline index . This theory states that when the economy is doing well , skirts and dresses tend to get shorter , while, when we are in a time of economic decline , they get longer .
Another similar theory links high heels and platforms to economic downturns . The first modern platforms , designed by Salvatore Ferragamo in 1938 , just a year before the outbreak of World War II . The characteristic footwear of the 70's were high platforms ; in this decade the GDP also suffered a contraction of about 2% , according to data from the World Bank.
Fashion is a complex art ; it is the way in which we express our individuality and at the same time reaffirm our belonging to a certain group . It is linked to social, political, economic and cultural processes ; fashion is walking history .
Because, finally, « Fashion is the most powerful art that exists. It is movement, design and architecture; all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we would like to be ."
-. Blair Waldorf, Gossip Girl.
