Moccasins: Declaration of freedom.

25 June 2023

Our daily life is surrounded by everyday life and, although almost everything that surrounds us was not part of our routine at some point, once we have become accustomed to it, it remains and it almost seems that we forget it.

This simple rule of life can be applied to almost everything, even fashion. But what we don't always see at first glance is that fashion transforms with the times. What seems so usual to us today was not always like this.

For example, in the 17th century, heels were a sign of masculinity and were worn by men. Today, it is completely the other way around. Eras fill every aspect of people's lives with meaning, and one of those manifestations is visible in what they wear.

In several paintings of European kings the use of heels can be seen.

It was not until the 19th century that a clear difference began to be made between women's and men's footwear, but there is a shoe that today is completely accepted by both genders and that in recent decades is synonymous with classic taste and elegance. We are referring, of course, to the moccasins.

And, returning to our rule of life, it was not always like this. The moccasin comes from very ancient times. The word moccasin comes from " makasin " , from the Powhatan language , spoken by Native Americans. They were made of untanned leather and joined by a single-line seam, which we can still slightly glimpse in contemporary models.

But the story of the loafer as we know it begins in 1936, when footwear dynasty GH Bass & Co launched the Weejun shoe for men. Interestingly, it proved even more popular with women who bought it in children's sizes.

Of course, initially it was not a shoe designed for women. It was perceived as an informal model and outside of trends. Gucci, with its launch of luxury loafers, made evident the contribution of Italian elegance to the world, finally achieving the change in that perception.

And, later, many divas of various eras, such as Audrey Hepburn and Jane Birkin, integrated it into their style, showing a new form of manifestation of women's empowerment. Such was the impact of this shoe that little by little, more elevated or high-heeled moccasins were seen.

Although it may not seem like it, the evolution of moccasins is closely linked to a form of femininity. They create an androgynous look that highlights and externalizes attributes that today more than ever we know are not exclusive to men: strength, practicality and work. Today, elegance and utility are added to this, both at their finest.

The moccasin not only continues to be a relevant shoe, but has become a favorite. This is also why in recent years they have been one of the preferred models to combine with the acclaimed power suits , the materialization of feminine power and good dressing in work life, sometimes almost completely replacing heels. Today, this footwear has taken a very different turn from its origin and is integrated into our daily lives with very different values.

As pioneers of Mexican footwear, we have sought to innovate in all our creations, and moccasins are no exception. At Regina Romero we offer you many designs that highlight the value of this footwear with high quality materials, textures, contrasts and interesting color palettes. The way we dress denotes our freedom, but perhaps today is the time when the moccasin is the best representation of this value.
