What I Learned from the Italian School

12 June 2021

In the early 1990s , Mexican customs prohibited imports of any type of footwear . All the shoes that were sold within the country were made in Mexico; however, the quality was not always the best. In those years , my mother , Regina Calzada de Romero, and I decided to take a trip to Italy with the intention of perfecting our method .

We chose Italy because the footwear industry in this country has one of the highest quality standards in the world . In addition, the manufacturing process continues to be, mostly handmade , a very important factor for us. Great designers and fashion houses such as Salvatore Ferragamo , Guccio Gucci or Mario Prada have emerged from this country .

During that trip we had the opportunity to visit an exhibition of suppliers for footwear. There, we met a businessman who was dedicated to the machinery for shoes. We expressed our interest in learning some of the secrets of the Italian school and he , neither slow nor lazy, saw the opportunity to export some of his products to Mexico: the raw material was not prohibited.

That's how he contacted us with one of the best modelers I've ever met who was also Violacci 's manager : Nino Calzolari, one of the most recognized and prestigious brands during that time. Thanks to him, we learned to make shoes just like the Italians. We decided to invite him to Mexico so he could get to know our workplace and our people, and pass on some of his best advice along the way .

He shared with us that to create a spectacular pair of shoes you need three things: creativity, technique and attention to detail . To date, this is one of the phrases that I remember the most every day. In this way we began to see how products made in Mexico could have a quality equal to that of the Italian school .

He taught us to give a defined structure to our processes ; to measure the lasts to adapt them to our market and showed us some procedures to optimize our cuts and stitching , all with the impeccable Italian technique . He was surprised by the spectacular workforce that we have in Mexico and assured that the key is to know how to do it . Once you have your process well articulated, the rest is practice, effort and passion .

It took us a while to perfect the technique but we finally succeeded. Today, many years later, we can say that we have developed our own shoe manufacturing process, which asks nothing of the Italian. It is based on our strengths , but taking into account our weaknesses , always maintaining the highest quality standards of the international industry , in order to provide you with the best shoes in Mexico.
