How to clean suede shoes? Tricks and tips.

8 April 2018

Suede is a fabric created from the skin of elk or other animals and it is a very soft and thin fabric that is normally used mainly for many winter shoes. It is also used in other types of clothing and its cleaning is quite difficult due to its sensitivity. With the arrival of summer, cleaning suede shoes becomes one of the household chores. After a long winter using this type of footwear, it is time to place it in our closets, clean and clean. Cleaning suede shoes sometimes becomes a difficult task and above all it is something very delicate due to the sensitivity of this fabric. Therefore, we must know how to clean them correctly so that they are in perfect condition for the next time we use them. The first of the recommendations for cleaning suede shoes is to prevent dirt as soon as possible. To do this, just when we buy shoes made of this material, what we should do is buy a waterproof solution. We can find it in specialized shoe stores. This solution serves to repel liquids that may fall on the shoe and thus avoid certain stains that may later be worse to remove.

If once the shoes are used, they accumulate dust or dirt and we have not been able to avoid it with professional products, what we should do to clean suede shoes is to use an old soft-bristled toothbrush to remove dirt. We must brush the surface in the same direction as the hair of the shoe to achieve a perfect finish. If we stain suede shoes with a liquid product, such as mud, it is better to wait for it to dry and then remove it with the same toothbrush.

If after trying to remove the stains from our suede shoes, they still persist, we can use a children's eraser and pass it over the strongest stains. Cleaning suede shoes quickly and easily for light stains would be with a clean damp cloth and comb it in the same direction as the fabric. Our suede shoes can also get stained with grease, in this case, you have to be much more careful because cleaning is complicated. In the first place we can use the classic toothbrush soaked in a little ammonia; We should not overdo it either, since we can damage the surface, so we must mix it with water and rinse little by little so that the dirt that we are removing does not accumulate. Once this is done, we let the shoe dry away from moisture and the sun and, to maintain its shape, we can put it on a tree and even insert some balls of newspaper to absorb moisture. Another option to clean grease-stained suede shoes is to use coarse salt or talcum powder. This option is useful when the fat has not yet been absorbed into the fabric so the salt or talcum powder will absorb the fat. For ink stains, the process for cleaning suede shoes changes. This time it is a very simple and easy trick: use cellophane. Just by putting a piece on the stain and giving a strong pull, the stain will disappear. Then we must brush it in the same direction as the fabric to achieve a perfect finish. If we have other types of stains that are not ink or grease, we can try to remove them using a sponge soaked in water and detergent. Then we rinse it with water and pass it again to remove the foam. Once it's dry, we brush it again. We can also remove other types of stains with a file or fine sandpaper rubbing on the surface. On this occasion we must be very careful not to damage the fabric since suede is quite sensitive. One last trick to remove stains and clean suede shoes or garments made of this fabric is to moisten a cloth with vinegar and apply it to the stain. Afterwards, we wait for it to dry and pass a specialized brush on this fabric to achieve the perfect finish that we were looking for in our shoes. If we see that none of these tricks work, we can resort to specialized products to clean suede shoes. These products gradually destroy the original color or texture of our suede shoes, so it is not highly recommended to use them except in extreme cases. If we have no choice but to use them, it is advisable to apply them over the entire surface so that there is a uniform color and no stains remain. As you can see, cleaning suede shoes could be a somewhat simpler task as long as we know the right tricks to achieve a perfect finish.
