How are leather soles made?

17 July 2020

A good pair of shoes must have the best materials and the best construction.

Each of the parts from the cut, the lining, the heel, the seams, etc. The sole cannot be the exception.

At Regina Romero we have been developing, changing and improving all the elements of fine shoes for 35 years to provide you with the best quality.

Today I want to tell you a little about how we make our leather soles.

Regina Romero

To achieve an excellent leather sole, the first thing we have to do is select large leathers, we generally use the central part that is called the butt .

Now that we have the hides we need located, the next step is to tan them in large piles and drums.

Our process is 100% vegetable and is made with mixtures of extracts such as chestnut, quebracho and mimosa, which guarantees extraordinary physical properties in the sole. It prevents water from being absorbed or penetrated, but at the same time, since it is a completely natural material, it allows your foot to breathe normally.

In addition, it makes the leather very flexible and soft, but at the same time resistant, so that you never lose the comfort that characterizes us so much at Regina Romero.

With the leather already tanned, we continue with the process of pre-finishing the sole. In which the first thing is to "soften" or cut the leather to the shape we need.

Each of the dies is made to fit the last and size, which range from 22mx to 27mx, which is used at that time.

Once we have the sole cut, we have to match it.

After pairing the process varies a bit depending on the type of shoe. For example, in the case of the Bostonians, you have to place the sole in a machine to make it close.

You also have to put the heel on it, we use heels made of a special wood that is very compact and light.

Subsequently, the sole must be placed in a machine that helps us glue the frame and shape the sole with respect to the last.

If the model that is being worked on does not have a frame, we only proceed to shape the sole according to each of the lasts that we have.

Once this is finished, you have to pass the entire sole through a machine called "pomasa". This machine gives that suede-like finish to the sole. This generates more resistance in the sole when walking to prevent you from slipping.

Most of these processes are manual, although we do use some machines that streamline some processes and keep them standardized, but the results are always being supervised by one of our expert collaborators to maintain uniformity in each of the soles.

Also, I remind you that leather, being a natural fiber, can have some imperfections, and this is completely normal.

However, we try to select the most even leathers to achieve that perfect finish.

Regina Rosemary

At Regina Romero we are always innovating and looking to improve some of the techniques to bring you the latest and greatest in footwear. That is why we are exploring different processes to make our soles anti-slip.

We want them to be completely made of leather, but with some rubber injection, it is possible to reduce slipping as much as possible and provide you with more stability.

This is, broadly speaking, the entire process that we carry out to manufacture our leather soles so that you can enjoy all the convenience and comfort in a 100% leather shoe with the best and most resistant leather soles.
